Melanie McDermott is the Senior Researcher at Sustainable Jersey in the Sustainability Institute at The College of New Jersey. She conducts research in support of various aspects of the program, including best practices (or ‘actions’) across the wide range of sustainability topics, such as the municipal role in promoting social equity and improving the local social and environmental determinants of health.

With degrees in interdisciplinary social science (Ph.D.) and forestry (MSc.), she has three decades of research experience in the U.S., Southeast Asia, Southern Africa, and the Caribbean. She serves as co-president of the Highland Park Shade Tree Committee and as an appointed member of the N.J. Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council.
